Imagining India

Finished reading Imagining India - great work by Nandan. Several aspects in the book are unknown to our generation.
We know so much about the pre-independence era but know too little what happened post independence.

Andhra - Telangana - A Tale of 2 Brothers

There are 2 bothers who were living in a 2BHK Apartment – Atmaram and Tulsiram.  Tulsiram always feels that their father has favored Atmaram in all matters of the household and has given him preference over him in most of the matters since many years. There is also a an element of arrogance of Atma due to his better financial and academic position which further irks Tulsi. Tulsi never went to school, dresses shabbily, speaks rough unlike his educated sibling Atma – but all this was because their father did not bother much about Tulsi.  Tulsi wants to get separated. He wants his part of the house to be separated where he can have full control.

Atma also wants the same but there is a catch!.  There is an important cupboard in Tulsi’s room which contains cash. Though technically speaking this cupboard belongs to Tulsi – but the fact cannot be denied that due to the collective efforts of Atma  and Tulsi the cash in this cupboard has doubled over the years. Due to this Atma does not want Tulsi to get separated. He is not bothered about Tulsi staying with him – but what he’s bothered is that the cupboard will also go with Tulsi if he gets separated.

Historically the cupboard has remained in Tulsi’s room and therefore it does indeed belong to him. Due to his interest in the cupboard Atma opposes Tulsi’s plan for separation and wants to stay united. Atma is least bothered about the leakages, termite-infestation, cockroaches etc in the other parts of Tulsi’s room. All he wants the cupboard… but he cannot say so openly…therefore he wants to stay together.

But this cupboard has 2 locks – and Tulsi and Atma both own one key each for these 2 locks. If the house gets separated, its certain that the cupboard will go with Tulsi…but how will Tulsi open the cupboard without the second key? If he opts to break open the cupboard then how will he ensure that he will not cause harm to the cupboard which will again take 1 year to repair…..
